Is protective gear really necessary in sports???
The only sport I think protective gear is necessary is ice hockey, because without the gear, players would get killed. Aside from ice hockey, I don't think it's necessary in sports.

- Oh My Gosh YES!!
- My nuts disagree.
- For boxing you need protective gear as well. Many sports you need it. You can end up with no teeth and no b@lls!
- Have you had a cricket ball in the nuts?
- i think it is in all, like if you get hit with in the head with any kind of ball you can get injured, especially in motocross there are sooo many injuries that helmets are really important
- Obviously you never played infield in baseball. I'll take a hockey stick to the head before i take a baseball to the nuts anyday.
- football because there are some big time injuries there
- Even in ice hockey there is too much gear these days. Years ago, the players wore much smaller gear and they NEVER EVER wore helmets. Interestingly, there were much fewer injuries back then. Players didn't raise the puck and they rarely ever took cheap shots or swung sticks at other players. Want to avoid injuries? Teach players respect. More gear is not the answer. Signed. A Canadian hockey fan.
- Sounds like you don't PLAY sports, you just WATCH sports. Why don'y you try playing football without protective gear and THEN ask your question?
- Oh really, Motocross? Downhill mountainbiking? Fencing? Jousting? Horseriding? BMXing? Scateboarding? Grand Prix? And loads more..... You didn't think very hard about this did you?
- Have you ever been hit by a lacrosse stick or ball? Have you ever had your shins knocked, when playing football or hockey? Have you ever seen a bloke fall on the floor when something hits him in the groin, even when wearing a box? Have you ever fallen off a horse - hitting your head or just your body? Well open your eyes and don't think that the only "hard" sport out there is ice hockey. Get off the keyboard and try one of the above without protection - see how you think then! People get killed or seriously injured in other sports too and most of the time its the protective clothing that saves them.
- yes it is indeed needed in some sports dippending on what it its like F1 ect.
- In cricketers and martial artists boxes (groin guards )are necessary, it saves allot of pain if hit there. They also wear gum shields as do rugby players, it keep our pearly whites in tact. Amateur boxers wear head gear to prevent unnecessary brain damage. We cyclists wear helmets. One saved my live when I met a car head on, on my side of the road. If I had not worn a helmet I would be alive or mentally with it to answer your question. Yes protective gear is very necessary in sports.
- Dude, not everyone wants look like a Wayne Rooney at the end of the day.
- Wow ,I'd like you to go out and play lacrosse without equipment. You would get seriously injured. Same thing with football, motor cycle racing, NASCAR, ect. Even bicycling on the street can kill you or paralyze you. Thats why they make helmets.
- I understand that American Football with its protective gear developed because of players getting killed playing rugby. It depends how hard you want to play a game.
- Protective gear is necessary in most sports. Tackle football: Helmet to prevent concussions; pads to prevent broken bones; mouth guard to prevent chipped or knocked out teeth Wrestling: Ear guards to prevent becoming deaf Soccer: Shin guards to prevent spikes to the legs and bruise or broken legs Softball: Helmet to prevent concussions; batters gloves to absorb painful vibrations during batting; gloves to provide padding when catching ball; catchers mask to protect face and head from thrown bats, bad pitches or tipped balls; catchers chest protector to from thrown bats, bad pitches or tipped balls; catchers leg proctector to prevent injuries from thrown bats, bad pitches or tipped balls Baseball: Same as softball; cup to prevent injuries to 'family jewels' and to allow players to have kids Volleyball: knee pads to prevent friction burns and bruises
- have you ever seen football now. Do you see the huge hits in it. if you're not wearing pads you may easily die. also in lacrosse you could get seriously injured without protective gear.
- Try martial arts training without protective gear. Even WITH padded mitts a smack on the face really hurts, not to mention what a good kick in the right place can do to you and your future prospects. If you want to take part in some form of contact sport without protection then you do so with the intention of spending a lot of downtime as your bones mend.
