How to stay cool on the football field?

I will be playing women's professional football (tackle) for the first time this year. Next week we start practicing in full gear in 70 - 90 degree weather. We've been practicing indoors with just our helmets for the past few weeks and my head's been sweating so much it's running into my eyes and blinding me. I can't IMAGINE what it's gonna be like in full gear. Does anyone out there have any idea how to stay cool out there in the hot sun in full-on football gear? Thx!

  1. Make sure to drink lots of fluids. You don't want to get dehydrated.
  2. Wear a wet bandanna under your helmet.
  3. For the sweat, wear a bandana or cut off a shirt sleeve and wear it on your head under your helmet. There really is no surefire way to keep cool. I played at high levels and live and played in California in the summer and it is warm here. My advice is to put cool water on the back of your neck when you get breaks. This is the best way to cool your body down. And also make sure you are hydrating properly with water, not Gatorade. Gatorade after the game and/or half time, water during. There is a lot of sugar in Gatorade that can make you crash.
  4. To start, you are already "cool" for playing football. That said, put sunscreen on your forearms for prolonged sunexposure (also helps people to slide off of you when they tackle you by the arms). Give up drinking for a while. You're going to sweat, alot. That's football. If you didn't loose a pound or two out on the field, you had more to give out there. Stay hydrated, don't cake yourself full of extra padding (holds in heat), when standing around waiting for instruction put your hands up under your pads and your, um....breasts i guess (thats so cool) and give a little space for air to circulate. When given breaks to get water....GET WATER. If the coach allows you to take your helmet off, take it off. The whole point of 2adays, summer camp, and practice is to get you acclimated to the uniform, condition you, and get you football smart (no jokes please). Know the playbook, and where you're supposed to be on the field: it'll save you alot of waisted movements and cut down on needless running/pursuit. Hope this helps and again, you are amazing for playing football. Need more like you.
  5. by taking special types of pills like day quill it gets you high and cool at the same time
