Why does my t-shirts get yellow stripes on the shoulders after hanging in the closet?

I am asking this question for my grandma. She gets yellow stripes on her t-shirts after they have hung in the closet. She does smoke, but she does not smoke in the bedroom. Her shirts are the only shirts that get the stripes. They do wash off though in the washer. Its a mystery!

  1. tell her to stop smoking
  2. Is she using metal hangers and hanging the shirts up wet? That may be the problem.
  3. vacation dust settling on them. if you wont be wearing them for a period of time, keep them in a hanging bag. has nothing to do with smoking !! i used to have that problem with white shirts i hadn't worn for a while and I DONT SMOKE.
  4. Smoke is like air it enters even those close cabinets or closets and the whole house. Even ceilings and walls they become yellow in a short time. Smoke invade every corner.
  5. Its the smoke, tar, and nicotine settling on her clothes. Though she doesn't smoke in her room, the smoke travels through the house. She has options, close doors, smoke outside, or quit smoking.
  6. It is probably the smoke taking a ride on air borne dust. If she wants her clothing to stay clean in the closet, tell her to buy a roll of those dry cleaning bags and keep her garments in those to prevent the yellow shoulder stripes.
  7. I don't think it is the smoke that is affecting her clothes. She might be using rusty hangers which results having yellow stripes.
