How do I get out those awful yellow underarm stains from my cool t-shirts?

I have many old t-shirts that I love, but that are nearly ruined with yellow underarm stains that don't seem to come out with bleach, Shout, or anything else I've tried. However, several years ago, an ex's mother snuck my clothes out to wash, did them by hand, and old stains came out completely. Obviously, since it's an 'ex' situation, we don't talk now. But I really would love to find out how to bring my old shirts back to life! When my ex's mother washed my old t-shirts by hand, they had been through many dryers. And she somehow managed to make them white again.

  1. If those T-shirts have been through the dryer, the stain is set. Nothing you can do now.
  2. I Fels-Naptha soap on my husband's dress shirts for those stains. (http://www.clean4less.com/Product/Result.asp?Sku/clean-eqDIA%2004303) You can buy it in grocery stores. My mom uses an oxi-clean solution. You could try either. Wet the stained area, scrub with the bar of soap or the oxi-clean solution (we do use a soft scrub brush). Let them soak in soapy water for an hour or so then launder as you normally would. If you're also concerned about the odor (even though it looks like I've gotten the stain out, the smell is still there when I iron his shirts) you can use Fabreeze. A lot of Fabreeze. :) You could call your ex-es mom to ask. She might like to hear that you appreciated her being able to take such good care of your shirts.
  3. Soak them in white vinegar for several hours then put them through a regular wash.
  4. I read somewhere that a solution of water & ammonia can get the stains out. I would use like a 1:6 or 1:10 ratio because ammonia is pretty harsh.
  5. Throw them away and buy new t-shirts. Seriously - I've tried everything on my husband's, and nothing works. So I just buy him new shirts.
  6. Old stains may be impossible to remove, but here are some tips for preventing them and for removing fresh ones. Good luck with it.
  7. Oxi- clean, and bleach alternative do great for me. Bleach can do it, too.
